NEW YORK (AP) — The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said Thursday it ordered generic drug manufacturers to stop selling the antibiotic Augmentin in the United States. The drugmaker said it had found a generic alternative, but did not find any generic alternative to the brand name.
But the FTC said it was not aware of any other generic alternatives to Augmentin.
“We have determined that the Generic Alternative to Augmentin is not a suitable substitute for the brand name Augmentin,” the FTC said in a statement.
The company said that while the generic alternative is not a replacement for Augmentin, it is an effective alternative and will be sold by the company’s generic partner.
A similar product, Augmentin XR, is now available as a generic equivalent. The FDA has approved Augmentin XR to treat certain types of stomach and intestinal infections, including pneumonia and typhus.
FTC Commissioner Robert A. Heinze said that companies are not required to follow the FDA’s rules for the sale of generic drugs.
“We have been working with our generic partners to help ensure that generic medications are available to consumers,” he said. “The FTC and our generic partner, Teva Pharmaceuticals, will continue to work with them to make sure that this drug is a safe and effective alternative to the brand name drug Augmentin.”
Augmentin is a prescription antibiotic and is often used to treat certain infections.
“This drug is the most effective drug for the treatment of pneumonia,” the FDA said. “This drug can be used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, sinusitis, and lower respiratory tract infections.”
The FDA also noted that Augmentin is an effective treatment for urinary tract infections, and that some doctors prescribe Augmentin for these infections.
The FDA said it is reviewing the FDA’s decision and will likely make a final decision later this year.
AstraZeneca, which makes Augmentin, said its research on the drug had shown that it is effective against certain types of bacteria.
“Augmentin is an excellent drug for many people,” AstraZeneca said in a statement.
In May, the company began selling Augmentin as a generic alternative.
